The American Association for the Advancement of Science has issued its Board Statement on Climate Change. The report is dated December 6, 2006, but it was not released until today, February 18, 2007. This report joins follows on the International Panel on Climate Change that issued its most report on climate change and human contribution only a few weeks ago.
The report includes the following conclusion:
The scientific evidence is clear: global climate change caused by human activities is occurring now, and it is a growing threat to society. Accumulating data from across the globe reveal a wide array of effects: rapidly melting glaciers, destabilization of major ice sheets, increases in extreme weather, rising sea level, shifts in species ranges, and more. The pace of change and the evidence of harm have increased markedly over the last five years. The time to control greenhouse gas emissions is now.
The full AAAS Report calls for governmental action to address the risk of future potential devasting changes that the organziation concludes will follow significant global warming.
